The British tenor Guy Cutting has got a focused, homogeneous and bewitching way of singing.

Monteverdi – Vespers
Collegium Vocale Gent at La Scala
Connession all’Opera, 11 March 2025

Briton Guy Cutting has made a name for himself as a baroque specialist, but now also has Mozart and contemporary works in his repertoire. The bright, balanced, warm-timbered tenor that he has at his disposal gives hope for further expansion of his repertory.

… with Guy Cutting’s beguiling and attentive singing of the final aria. It caps another exceptional Bach recording from an ensemble and director who just keep giving.

Gramophone, 5 October 2023

Cutting is an evangelist whose beautiful voice, wonderful phrasing and perfect diction are reminiscent of the great Bach interpreters Ernst Haefliger, Peter Schreier and Daniel Behle. His noble tenor was a blessing…

Bach – Christmas Oratorio (Weihnachtsoratorium) BWV248
Le Concert Lorrain
Tageblatt Luxembourg, 21 December 2023

The tenor Guy Cutting was startlingly impressive in his dramatic aria ‘Ich will nur dir zu Ehren leben’ (Thy name I live to praise and honour), a real display piece that had all the intensity of a rage aria and was here despatched with tremendous virtuosity.

Tenor Guy Cutting was a worthy colleague … each of his performances was a complete delight, displaying precious vocal colour, highly refined technique and impeccable expression.

Bach – Cantatas 8, 138, 75
Collegium Vocale Gent
Ritmo, 3 February 2025

British tenor Guy Cutting was a Rising Star of the Enlightenment, his star has now well and truly risen. He is now a sought-after interpreter of Bach, and his experience shone through in this intelligent performance. I was much taken by his virtuosic trilling in ‘Frohe Hirten’ on the words ‘labet Herz und Sinnen’ and in ‘Ich will dir nur zu Ehren leben’, accompanied very stylishly by principal first and second violins.

Potter and Cutting performed really well, singing with enough presence and agility, always expressive and with good singing lines.

In the arias from the cantata BWV 8 and 75 the tenor Guy Cutting brought great attention to detail, clear diction and the right amount of emotion to each text

The Benedictus is a trial for any tenor, as it needs agility and consistency of tone across the wide range of fleeting notes; Guy Cutting took all this in his stride to deliver a perfect and seamless account.

A particularly vivid moment came with the Domine Deus … featuring a wonderful duet between Mields’ soprano and Guy Cutting’s pleasing, carefully modulated tenor.

Bach – B Minor Mass
Collegium Vocale Gent
The Arts Desk, 15 June 2024

Guy Cutting was able to project his velvety tenor up to the dome of the Frauenkirche with the correct blend of overtones across all dynamics, both in the ensembles and solos.

Finally, what more can be said about the luminous but nevertheless virile tenor Guy Cutting, other than that, admirable in the arias, sensitive “sayer” in the recitatives, gifted in addition with a limpid diction and an acute sense of the narrative, he embodies an Evangelist clear of spirituality?

Bach – Christmas Oratorio (Weihnachtsoratorium) BWV248
Le Concert Lorrain
Luxemburger Wort, 19 December 2023

And the tenor Guy Cutting … sings the role of the evangelist, including the arias, as soulfully and in the moment as one could only wish for. In the aria “Frohe Hirten” the singer and solo flautist scatter the coloratura like snow crystals without distracting from the intimacy of the image.

Bach – Christmas Oratorio (Weihnachtsoratorium) BWV248
OAE/Masaaki Suzuki
Hamburger Abendblatt, 7 December 2023

The Evangelist (and tenor soloist) Guy Cutting announced both the miraculous birth, and himself as an ingratiating guide to everything to come. His singing of the three tenor arias was exemplary in style, that in Part 4 with two solo violins particularly memorable.

Bachtrack, 4 December 2023

Guy Cutting was a strong toned, vibrant Evangelist who, nevertheless, brought some lovely moments of lyrical beauty to the music to. Tenor Guy Cutting got his aria moment, his lovely fluid yet vibrant tone contrasting with the fine flute playing of Lisa Beznosiuk Guy Cutting’s Evangelist in this cantata was notable for his beautifully shape, mellifluous phrases.

Guy made a fine Evangelist, his narrative clear and forthright. Later, in his aria, his coloratura proved fluently beautiful.
