BIOGRAPHY

British tenor Guy Cutting is recognised internationally for his insightful interpretations of Bach and the baroque repertoire

Guy Cutting is widely acclaimed for his compelling performances and refined musicianship, with a particular reputation in the music of J.S. Bach. A regular soloist with Collegium Vocale Gent and conductor Philippe Herreweghe, he has performed across many of the world’s leading concert halls and festivals including La Scala Milan, Carnegie Hall NYC, the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall, Seoul Arts Center, The Philharmonie Berlin, Tonhalle Zurich, Elbphilharmonie Hamburg and the Concertgebouw Amsterdam. Cutting is in great demand as Evangelist in Bach’s Passions. His interpretations are noted for their expressive phrasing, technical fluency and deep understanding of the text.

He has collaborated with many of the world’s foremost period conductors such as Philippe Herreweghe, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Masaaki Suzuki, John Butt, Paul McCreesh, Jos van Veldhoven and Marcus Creed, as well as the new generation of conductors and directors including Jonathan Cohen, Leonardo García Alarcón, Peter Whelan, Laurence Cummings, Richard Egarr, Hans-Christoph Rademann, Daniel Reuss and Dinis Sousa.

A sought-after soloist, Guy has appeared with leading period ensembles such as the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Handel and Haydn Society, the Academy of Ancient Music, Collegium Vocale Gent, Monteverdi Choir, Netherlands Bach Society, Dunedin Consort, Arcangelo, Gli Angeli Genève, Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century and the American Bach Soloists. His work extends beyond early music, with performances alongside modern orchestras such as the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, English Chamber Orchestra, Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Northern Sinfonia, Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, and Britten Sinfonia.

While Bach remains at the heart of his repertoire, Cutting also performs a wide range of music from the early Baroque to the 21st century. Guy was both a chorister and a Choral Scholar at New College, Oxford; the inaugural recipient of the American Bach Soloists’ Jeffrey Thomas Award; and a Rising Star of the Enlightenment for the OAE.

Equally at home on the recital platform, Guy has performed Schubert Lieder with Kristian Bezuidenhout, Haydn with Steven Devine at Wiltshire Music Centre, Boulanger with Nigel Foster at the London Song Festival, and English song with George Ireland and Hannah Ely at festivals including Crete Senesi in Tuscany and Clifton International Festival of Music. With Damask Vocal Quartet, a chamber music ensemble focused on the Romantic and contemporary repetoire, Guy has made appearances at Dutch National Opera, Musis Arnhem, De Doelen Rotterdam and Snape Maltings.

Guy’s extensive solo discography spans works by Bach, Scarlatti, Handel, Charpentier, Couperin, Clérambault, Blow, Mozart, Stravinsky and Gabriel Jackson on labels such as Linn Records, Signum Classics, Pentatone, Avie Records, Novum, and Delphian Records. He has contributed extensively to the Netherlands Bach Society All of Bach video series. Forthcoming releases include his début solo album with pianist George Ireland, featuring Vaughan Williams’ Songs of Travel alongside other English songs including a new commission by Piers Connor Kennedy, ‘In the Belovéd Hour’.
